Check the Engine: Is Your Business Built to Run Smoothly?
Diagnose before you delegate. Tune it up before you try to scale it.
A couple of years ago, I was reviewing my business to find where I could pivot.
We were growing, but something felt off.
Deadlines were slipping.
Reports were late.
My team was out of rhythm.
At first, I blamed the people.
But something told me to pause and ask a better question:
👉🏽 Is this a people problem—or a process problem?
I sat down with one of my team members and said:
"Look, something’s broken. We either fix it together—or we’re going to burn out the team and the business."
That’s when I realized…
If a business problem lingers more than 6–8 weeks—it’s not just the issue that’s broken. It’s your responsibility to it.
I had to step back and evaluate:
Was this a talent issue—or a systems issue?
Was I leading or just managing?
And most importantly…
👉🏽 Was my vision being carried by systems—or crushed by a lack of them?
🛠️ The Mechanical Check: 6 Systems to Tune Before You Scale
You don’t need more hands—you need a better engine.
Here’s the 6-part diagnostic I use to streamline chaos into clarity:
1. Strategy Deep Dive
Pull your team together. Ask for everything—data, insights, bottlenecks.
Get in the weeds, not to micromanage—but to measure what’s real.
Don’t assume. Diagnose. If you can’t see the problem, you can’t solve it.
2. Structure & Sequence
Vision is one thing. Flow is another.
Does your team know what matters most and in what order?
Businesses that grow well have clear lanes, clear priorities, and clear leaders.
3. Systems & Metrics
If your metrics aren’t clear, your results won’t be either.
Create a reporting rhythm that supports performance, not perfection.
What gets tracked gets traction.
4. Scheduled Goals, Targets & Incentives
Your goals must live where your team works.
Tie targets to meaningful rewards that fuel motivation and ownership.
No more mystery metrics. Make goals visible, winnable, and worth it.
5. Culture & Capacity
Systems should support your people, not suffocate them.
Culture isn’t words on a wall—it’s how your team feels when problems hit.
Build a business that doesn’t just work—it works for the people in it.
6. Review & Recalibrate
Alignment isn’t one-and-done.
You need to audit performance, adjust priorities, and communicate clearly.
Systems without review become outdated strategies. Keep them alive.

🚘 “Your business isn’t just a calling—it’s a vehicle.”
Which means… it operations with:
✅ Oil (systems)
✅ Steering (strategy)
✅ Drivers (people)
✅ Regular maintenance (metrics and review)
And just like a high-performance car…
If you don’t check the engine, it doesn’t matter how good it looks—it will eventually break down.
✅ What You Must Remember
Smooth businesses run on systems, not memory.
Sticky notes, Slack messages, and hope are not systems.
Legacy businesses simplify, standardize, and document. You can’t scale what isn’t stable.
Before you grow—fix the friction.
Before you hire—check the handoffs.
Before you build more—tighten what’s already there. If your vision has no support, it becomes a stressor.
Structure protects purpose.
Systems protect peace.
