Rooted Identity: You Don’t Build a Legacy From Hustle—You Build It From Identity
🧱 You Don’t Build a Legacy From Hustle. You Build It From Identity.
In 2024, I had the opportunity to visit the Edward Lowe Foundation’s learning campus, better known as Big Rock Valley (BRV)—and it forever changed how I think about legacy.
I went expecting a standard leadership retreat.
I assumed it would be hosted at a hotel, filled with structured sessions, networking mixers, and surface-level takeaways.
But I was wrong.
What I experienced wasn’t just a business retreat.
What I got instead was a masterclass in rooted identity, legacy, and immersive leadership.
It was a living case study on identity-driven legacy.
And the lessons I took from that visit reshaped everything I now believe about building a meaningful business.
🌳 What I Found in Big Rock Valley
Edward and Darlene Lowe, the creators of the world’s first cat litter product (Kitty Litter), weren’t just successful entrepreneurs.
They were legacy builders—visionaries who embedded their identity into every inch of what they built.
They were architects of legacy.
When Ed purchased the 158-acre property in Southwest Michigan in 1964, he wasn’t just buying land—he was designing a legacy.
From the repurposed train cars turned into guest housing, to the custom wallpaper Darlene handpicked for each room…
From fiberglass sculptures to antique collections woven throughout the property…
Every detail of BRV speaks.
You don’t just visit BRV—you experience the Lowe legacy.
It’s a living testimony—every acre, artifact, and architectural detail reflects Ed and Darlene.
Not just about what they did, but who they were.
Their values, interests, and intentions weren’t added as an afterthought.
They were integrated into the very fabric of the campus.
And I realized two powerful things:
“Legacy doesn’t come from what you build. It comes from who you are while building it.”
“You don’t build influence by accident. You design it through identity.”
🧠 What This Has to Do With Your Business
You may not have 158 acres or a national brand (yet)—but the same principle applies to you.
When someone visits your website, walks into your office, or signs up for your product or service, they aren’t just purchasing a solution.
They’re creating a mental movie—a belief about the value your business can bring to their life.
They’re building a belief about who you are and what your business represents.
This is what I call the Product Story—and if it isn’t rooted in identity, it becomes forgettable.
Because without identity, your brand becomes just another transaction.
The businesses that last aren’t just useful.
They’re memorable.
They stand for something.
They feel like someone.
So, you're building more than just a business. Your business a legal person that has the ability to impact generations in your absence.
🔍 The 3 Pillars of Your Product Story in Your Rooted Identity

1. 🧾 Product Promise
This is the expectation you set through marketing, messaging, and storytelling.
This is how you describe and deliver your product or service.
It lives in your content, sales copy, your offers, your pitches, your onboarding emails, and your elevator pitch.
It’s what customers expect to experience.
It’s the answer to the question:
“What transformation can I expect by working with you?”
When rooted in identity, your product promise speaks with clarity, not hype. It connects emotionally and delivers spiritually and strategically.
2. 🛠 User Onboarding
This is the experience your clients have as they enter your solar system.
How does your client feel as they interact with your world?
The sign-up process, the welcome message, the tutorial, the follow-up—all of it forms the emotional imprint of your brand.
Your welcome kits are more than logistics.
They’re identity transfer mechanisms.
Rooted leaders don't just automate workflows.
They orchestrate connection.
Everything from your visuals to your voice should whisper:
“You’re safe here. You’re seen here. You’re about to be transformed here.”
3. 🎯 Core Value
Your core value is your non-negotiable.
It's the ONE THING your brand delivers better than anyone else.
It’s the culture, conviction, and character that makes your business yours.
If everything else was stripped away, this is the thing you’d protect.
It’s also the thing your clients feel—even if they don’t have the words to describe it.
“Legacy isn’t about doing more. It’s about building a business that becomes more of who you already are.”
“You don’t need louder messaging. You need clearer identity.”
🔐 Why Rooted Identity Is Non-Negotiable
Let me make this plain:
✅ Identity is not a title—it’s a truth.
You are not what you do. You are who you were designed to be. Your business is who you are when you designed it. When your leadership is rooted in that truth, you become unshakeable. Unshakeable businesses last for generations.
✅ Insecure leaders overbuild, overprove, and overdeliver.
It’s not out of generosity—it’s from a need to earn approval. They lead from lack, not overflow. Rooted leaders don’t hustle to earn their worth—they lead from wholeness.
✅ You can’t lead others into clarity if you’re unclear about your values.
Confusion in your identity shows up as confusion in your business. Rooted identity leads to visionary clarity. If you don’t know what you stand for, your brand can’t stand up under pressure.
💬 Legacy Isn’t About Doing More
Every service.
Every product.
Every team interaction.
It’s all part of the story you’re writing—and it must be authored from identity.
The truth is: you’re already enough.
Legacy isn’t about overextending yourself to impress others.
It’s about becoming more of who you already are—and embedding that identity into every interaction.
From your first email to your last invoice...
From the product packaging to the customer support script...
Everything should carry the spiritual fingerprint of your leadership.
That’s what I saw at Big Rock Valley.
And that’s what I’m building now.
It’s what I invite you to build, too.
